FDA: Frozen Oyster Recall After Norovirus Cases
SANTA FE SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) — Asian food distributor Korean Farm is voluntarily recalling certain Assi brand frozen oysters from Korea after the Food and Drug Administration says they were linked to a norovirus outbreak that sickened three people in Washington state.
The FDA said Friday the oysters were served in an unidentified Washington state restaurant and eaten by three people who became ill. The FDA says they tested positive for norovirus.
The recall affects frozen, shucked oyster meat packed in 3-lb bags. Each bag is labeled Assi Brand "Individually quick frozen oyster" with a "Better if Used By" date of "2013.02.232." Each bag identifies Central Fisheries Co. Ltd., as the packer and Korean Farm of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., as the distributor.
Officials say the product was shipped to California, Washington, Alaska, Texas, Colorado, Arizona, Idaho and Utah.
Korean Farm import coordinator Joon Kwon said Friday night the product was sold to Asian grocery stores. He says his company has already informed affected customers of the recall.
