FBI Believes They've Nabbed 'Golden Years' Bandit
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The FBI announced Tuesday that they have taken the man they dubbed the "Golden Years" bandit into custody.
William McCormick Jr., 59, was remanded to federal custody after making an appearance in U.S. District Court in downtown Los Angeles, according to FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller.
Though he is currently facing one robbery count, McCormick-- of El Monte -- is suspected in five bank heists that occurred between January and September of this year in the cities of Alhambra, Rosemead and Bellflower.
Witness descriptions of the suspect and his methods were similar in each holdup, according to the FBI.
In each robbery, a man approached a teller, passed a note demanding cash and sometimes threatened violence, investigators said.
Eimiller said McCormick was arrested Oct. 6 by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies on suspicion of domestic violence.
An investigation is ongoing in the additional robberies, Eimiller said.
The robber got his nickname based on witness descriptions and bank surveillance photographs, Eimiller said.
