Fat Cat Biggie Is Stable After Delicate Surgery
MURRIETA CBSLA.com) — Biggie, the 37-pound cat adopted by the Riverside Cat Hospital after his owner was no longer able to take care of him, underwent delicate surgery Tuesday in an effort to cure a life-threatening medical condition.
Biggie suffered from what vets call "fatty liver syndrome."
"Biggie is stable after surgery and feedings are being given through his esophageal feeding tube to make sure he gets enough calories to get over the fatty liver syndrome," veterinarian Nichole Agarwal wrote in a statement.
Part of Biggie's colon was removed. He's also had extreme problems with constipation.
She added: "In my opinion, he is doing surprisingly well and is a real trooper through it all. He can probably be released back to the Riverside Cat Hospital for continued care as early as tomorrow."
Biggie's surgery was done at the California Veterinary Specialists in Murrieta.
Doctors were concerned Biggie might not make it through surgery, Agarwal said, due to decreased lung capacity from "all the fat in his chest." Also, she said, there was a risk his colon could come apart during surgery, which would be fatal.
Two pet food companies, Royal Canin and Hills, have offered to sponsor Biggie if he fully recovers, Agarwal reports.
A GoFundMe account has been set up to help other cats at the Riverside hospital in honor of Biggie.
