Fast-Moving Brush Fire Burns 300 Acres In Lancaster
LANCASTER (CBSLA.com) — A fast-moving brush fire has been reported in Lancaster.
As of 3:30 p.m., more than 150 acres were reported to have burned, according to the Los Angeles Couny Fire Department.
Less than 15 minutes later, the LACFD said the fire was up to 300 acres.
Almost 200 firefighters are battling the blaze located near 160th Street West and Lancaster Road.
The fire -- first reported just before 2 p.m. -- went to two alarms.
Officials said no structures are threatened. Officials said the fire was largely burning grass, brush and a large poppy field. In fact, LACFD is hashtagging the fire #PoppyFire.
Winds are gusting in the area at around 30 mph with temperatures hovering in the low 80s.
Stu Mundel, reporting in Sky9, said firefighters were battling the blaze from land and air. At least two choppers are dropping flame retardant on the fire.
As of 5:15 p.m. Friday the fire was nearly 70 percent contained, authorities said. By 8 p.m. officials said the fire was 80 percent contained.
