Fans To Get Chance To React To NFL Relocation Plans At Public Hearing
SAN DIEGO (CBSLA.com) — A crowd of angry Chargers fans are among those expected to be on hand for a public hearing in San Diego Wednesday night on efforts to relocate at least one NFL team to the Southland.
The town hall being held at the Spreckels Theater in downtown San Diego is the latest in a series of public hearings by the NFL this month - including hearings in Oakland and St. Louis - as the league looks into potentially relocating a franchise or two to Los Angeles.
An NFL task force has identified the Chargers, Raiders, and Rams as the franchises most likely to be relocated to a planned stadium in Carson.
Members of Commissioner Roger Goodell's executive staff will be in attendance Wednesday night to listen to comments and answer questions from the audience, according to league officials.
Fans and other members of the community are invited to ask questions and express their views directly to the NFL "before any decisions are made about potential relocation of a club or clubs from a current market."
While league officials have still not determined which team or combination of teams will ultimately make the move, San Diego City Councilman Scott Sherman told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO moving the St. Louis Rams to Los Angeles makes more sense.
"People up there, we've seen already, aren't real big on being Chargers fans," said Sherman. "It's mostly Rams fans or Raiders [fans]."
In August, the city of San Diego released a new video showing a proposed stadium in Mission Valley, but the proposal was met with derision by fans and team officials alike. A Chargers' spokesman called it "all fluff and no substance".
The hearing is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on the NFL's official website.
