Mother, Son Suspected In Assault On Mets Fan Outside Dodger Stadium
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com/AP) — A mother and her son are believed to have carried out an assault of a New York Mets fan outside Dodger Stadium following Game 1 of the National League Division Series, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said Tuesday.
The fight broke out around 10:30 p.m. in Lot L of Dodger Stadium after the Dodgers lost 3-1 to the New York Mets in the opening game of the National League Division Series.
According to witnesses, a loud argument broke out among rival fans in the parking lot, and a Mets fan was punched and fell, striking his head on the ground and suffering a severe head injury.
"I looked down and he was bleeding from his head, and Dodger fans had the towels and were holding his head up (after the beating)," Dodger fan Maria Cerecer said.
A witness to the attack told Ms. Cerecer that it was a man with long, blonde hair that had struck the victim in the face.
The victim remains hospitalized in critical condition.
"We believe that it is a son and a mother who are responsible for this assault," Beck said. "We believe that the weapons used was hands and feet."
Beck asked the public to contact police with any information that may lead to the assailants.
"If you were at Friday night's game in parking Lot L, post-game about 10:30 p.m. and you saw a fight, a scuffle, and you remember anything about it or you have video, please contact the Los Angeles Police Department," he said.
Security at Dodger Stadium came under national scrutiny after a 2011 attack in the parking lot on opening day left San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow with brain damage. Two men — Marvin Norwood and Louie Sanchez — pleaded guilty in the beating and went to prison.
Stow sued the Dodgers and their former owner Frank McCourt, blaming them for the attack because of insufficient security and lighting. A jury faulted the team, along with Sanchez and Norwood, and awarded Stow nearly $18 million after a six-week trial in 2014.
The Dodgers faced elimination Tuesday after falling to a 2-1 deficit against the Mets in NLDS Game 3.
Beck said if the series moves back to L.A., fans can count on a stepped-up police presence at Chavez Ravine.
Security videos in the Dodger Stadium parking lot reportedly captured the event.
