Family's Plea: Return Mother's Ashes Stolen In Home Invasion
SYLMAR (CBSLA.com) — A Sylmar woman is pleading with the intruders who broke into her family's home Wednesday to return the ashes of her late mother.
Kelly Kamakura's mother passed away three years ago, and was cremated. Her daughter kept the box of her ashes in the family's Sylmar home.
Sometime on Wednesday, intruders broke into the Kamakura home on Chesterwood St. through a window. According to police, more than one intruder likely took part.
The suspects ransacked a couple of rooms in the home and took Coach purses, jewelery and cash.
Detectives say whoever broke in left fingerprints in the home.
Though the intruders did not ransack the living room, police said the suspects opened the bottom drawer of a corner cabinet and took a wooden box containing the ashes of Kamakura's late mother, Pauline Kelly Hicks.
Kamakura said the ashes were in a simple wooden box with her mother's name on it. The box did not have a lock.
"Why would they take her ashes?" Kamakura said.
It is particularly upsetting so close to Mother's Day, she said.
"She was always in this house and I have a lot of good memories" of her in their home, said Kamakura. She said it was comforting to have her mother's ashes in the home after she passed away.
Kamakura is pleading with those who stole the ashes to return them.
The intruders can leave them at a hospital, church, or a grocery store, she told CBS2's Dave Lopez.
"I don't even care," she said. "I just want those ashes back."
