Family Sets GoFundMe Page For 14-Year-Old Fatally Struck Twice In Ventura Hit-And-Run
VENTURA (CBSLA.com) — A GoFundMe account has been established for a 14-year-old boy who was fatally struck by two hit-and-run drivers in Ventura.
The incident occurred early Friday morning at the intersection of Telegraph Road and Saticoy Avenue, officials said.
Responding officers arrived on scene and located the victim, an unidentified male, lying face down in the roadway. The teen was declared dead at the scene.
Authorities were withholding the victim's name but on Friday afternoon, the family set up a GoFundMe page.
They identified the deceased as Jonathan "Jon" Hernandez.
In less than six hours, nearly $5,000 (half their $10,000 goal) was reached.
The family said Hernandez was out riding his bike late on his late sister's birthday. She died in 2015 and he was out to "clear his mind," they wrote. "Jonathan was a good kid, played football for Buena High School and had a lot of friends. He was a typical 14-year-old boy. He did not deserve to be left dying on the street."
Detectives believe the teen was hit by two vehicles -- neither stopped.
Investigators have obtained surveillance video and identified the primary suspect vehicle as a white tow truck with a flatbed. After the initial collision, the suspect vehicle is observed continuing east on Telegraph Road.
A short time later, a second vehicle is observed hitting the victim who was laying in the roadway. That vehicle also leaves the scene and continued east on Telegraph Road. The second vehicle is described as a silver or light-colored compact sport utility vehicle.
The Ventura Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating the vehicles and the drivers. If you have any information, you're asked to call the Traffic Division at (805) 339-4323.
