Family Seeks Answers In Murder Of 23-Year-Old

COMPTON (CBSLA.com) — Friends and family held a car wash in Compton Sunday to raise money to pay for 23-year-old Iyshun Tornero's funeral.

Tornero was murdered April 16 just before midnight.

He and family were attending a friend's birthday barbecue party across the street from his residence in the 1700 block of West 151 Street in Compton when an unknown assailant (or assailants) sprayed the party from the street with three dozen rounds from an assault rifle.

Authorities say Tornero was not a gang member and his family confirmed that fact to CBS2's Art Barron.

Tornero's sister, Shavonna, wrote CBS2 an impassioned email asking for help. "Please help me get this story out as soon as possible to help bring my family justice."

She said her father performed CPR on her brother -- a star football player at Compton High who was about to start studies to become an X-ray technician -- but he died at the hospital while in surgery.

She also said "several others were hit also." Police confirmed at least one other party guest, a 14-year-old male, was struck. The teen had surgery and is recovering.

The deceased man's father, Cesar Tornero, told Barron, "This is very, very hard. It has ripped my heart apart."
