Family Of Slain Father In Compton Pleads For Help In Search For Killer

MONTEREY PARK (CBSLA.com) — The family of a man killed seven months ago at a barbecue in Compton pleaded Friday for the public's help in the search for his killer.

Andre McMihelk Jr. was shot and killed at a backyard in the 1000 block of Nestor Avenue about 7:40 p.m. May 14.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department released images of the suspect cars - a dark-colored four-door Nissan and a 2005 or 2006 Mini Cooper S with blue metallic paint and a black top.

A black man got out of the Nissan and shot McMihelk with an assault rifle, investigators said.

"As far as we know, Andre's not a gang member. This doesn't appear to be gang-related. It seems like he was targeted. For what reason? We don't know," Lt. John Corina said.

The 30-year-old, who was disabled, was engaged to be married to his pregnant fiancée, who is due to have their fifth child in three weeks.

His family is desperate for answers and closure.

"It was a senseless killing, and he's left behind five young children, and also a number of broken hearts that may never heal," said the victim's brother Jermaine McMihelk.

"Like we said, it was a barbecue. There's a lot of people on the street. It was daylight that time of year. So there's a lot of people probably saw what happened. We've had very few to almost none to anybody come forward and talk to us about what happened," Corina said.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Sheriff's Department.
