Family of San Bernardino Terror Attack Survivor Reopens Cupcake Business
VICTORVILLE (CBSLA.com) – Relatives of a survivor of the San Bernardino mass killings reopened their cupcake family business in Victorville more than five weeks after the massacre.
The line was long when M Cupcakes n Pastries at 15617 Roy Rogers Drive in Victorville opened for business again Monday.
"My wife started early this morning trying to catch up. And we're still short of cupcakes," said co-owner Hilario Venoya.
Margarita Venoya said after she learned that her son, Larry, was wounded in the mass shooting, "We just closed the door and left. I had to go find him."
The Venoya family posted a note on their door and on Facebook saying: "We will be closed until December 21, 2015. Sorry for the inconvenience but we will be back! Happy Holidays from M Cupcakes n Pastries."
But it was not much of a happy holiday for the family. They spent the month of December in the hospital with Larry. "Every day, we slept there with my mom," Margarita said. Larry has been back home from the hospital since Christmas Eve.
Many regular customers like Miguel Hernandez stopped by Monday. But most of the customers that day were first-time patrons.
"I just wanted to wish them a fast recovery and that we feel for them and to stay strong," Hernandez said.
"I've always wanted to come," first-time customer Vanessa Bartel said. "Now, I have a better reason to come in today."
Hilario said it's definitely not business as usual and probably never will be again.
"I don't know these people. But they're showing a lot of love," Hilario said.
