Family Of Caltrans Worker Injured In Hit-And-Run Hopes For Medical Miracle
RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — The family of a Caltrans worker who was badly injured in a hit-and-run crash in Riverside two weeks ago is praying for a medical miracle.
36-year-old Jesse Silva, a traffic control supervisor, was struck by an alleged drunk driver Jan. 14 while he was working on the 91 Freeway.
Suspect Enrique Lopez, 32, was arrested a short distance away from the scene.
Silva's mother, Brenda Alcazar, said the father of three girls has been non-responsive since the accident.
"It really saddens me to see him…that he can't respond. And I just wonder what he thinks and what he's feeling," she said.
Alcazar continued, "He doesn't respond to any commands, so we're just praying for that day where he opens his eyes."
The victim's fiancée, Tina Phillips, couldn't hold back her tears when she spoke to CBS2's Juan Fernandez about Silva's character.
"He's a really great man with a really, really big heart. The people that love him…he gives everything to," she said.
Silva's sister, Dolores, said, "I just want him to get better. I want to call him. There are so many things I want to do, but I can't."
The victim's family was in court Tuesday where it was decided that the case against Lopez wouldn't continue until next month.
"It's delaying what's going to happen," said Alcazar.
