Explosion Rocks San Pedro Apartment Complex

SAN PEDRO (CBSLA)  -- A huge explosion rocked a San Pedro apartment complex Sunday sending glass flying and hearts racing.

No injuries were reported, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A cause of the explosion is under investigation but preliminary reports would indicate a gas leak was responsible.

The explosion occurred in an apartment building on 13th Street and Averill.

CBS2/KCAL9 reporter Greg Mills spoke to residents who had more than their nerves rattled.

"It was loud. It was almost like it was an earthquake," said witness Janelle Blasing.

"It shook the house pretty good," said Ray Vaudo, a neighbor.

Gas inside the building was turned off by the LAFD. Gas leading to the building was turned off by SoCal Gas

Martha Mihovil's son and his wife have lived in the upstairs apartment for a little more than a year.

"It's scary. I'm shaking. I just can't believe it," Mihovil says. She had to tell her son and his wife what happened as neither was home at the time.

Mihovil said the couple's cat was missing. She went upstairs to look for the cat and grab some belongings.

"They won't let us go up there," she said, "the top could collapse."

Mills reported the building has been red-tagged.

It was a normal afternoon -- very quiet, until the explosion hit.

"It was pretty intense," says Shannon Monzon. "I seen the smoke coming from the back. I didn't know if there was a fire and I seen people running out with their dogs and stuff."
