Ex-USC Coach Out As Head Coach For USA Swimming
(CBS/AP)--A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Mark Schubert is out as head coach of the U.S. national swim team, and an e-mail confirms the decision.
The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because USA Swimming has not commented publicly on Schubert's status, says Schubert will not be returning from a 60-day leave of absence that still hasn't been explained.
USA Swimming executive director Chuck Wielgus wrote in an e-mail obtained by the AP that Schubert "is no longer the National Team Head Coach." It says that swimming's governing body will soon be announcing the process for hiring a new team leader. USA Swimming spokeswoman Jamie Olsen declined to comment on Schubert's status.
Schubert has been a six-time Olympic coach, and took over the newly created role of national coach after the Athens Games. He was leading the team for Michael Phelps' eight-gold-medal performance in Beijing.
Schubert was also head coach for the USC's mens and women swim team.
