Ex-Hurricane Simon Raises SoCal Surf, Brings Strong Rip Currents

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The National Weather Service is cautioning Southern California beachgoers to expect more high surf and strong rip currents due to a southeasterly swell from former Hurricane Simon.

The swell will move through coastal waters through late Tuesday, generating surf heights of 5 to 8 feet along south- and southeast-facing beaches of Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura and southern Santa Barbara counties. Catalina Island is included as well.

Minor coastal flooding in low-lying areas is also possible due to the combination of high surf and high tides.

Tropical Storm Simon is 120 miles west of Baja California and is moving north-northeast. It's expected to bring 3 to 5 inches of rain and isolated amounts up to 8 inches across northern Baja through Wednesday as it moves toward the Mexican mainland and Arizona.
