Endeavour To Visit Edwards Air Force Base En Route To LA
EDWARDS (CBSLA.com) — Retired space shuttle Endeavour will make a pit stop at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base on Sept. 19.
The shuttle, which has logged nearly 123 million miles, is making a $29 million move to the California Science Center near USC in Exposition Park.
Endeavour, which completed its 25th and final mission in June, is scheduled to depart Kennedy Space Center in Florida Sept. 17 atop NASA's modified Boeing 747.
Juan Fernandez, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, says the logistics to get the shuttle to Southern California have been months in the planning.
"Low-level flyovers are planned for the Lancaster – Palmdale area and several Northern California cities before the flight concludes with a flyover of several Los Angeles locations prior to landing at Los Angeles International Airport," NASA said in a statement.
The shuttle will make its way along city streets on a 12-mile route from LAX to Exposition Park when it lands on Sept. 20.
Endeavour will then be housed in a hangar on loan from United Airlines for two weeks.
Starting Oct. 12, the retired orbiter will begin traveling atop a NASA wheeled transporter east on Manchester Boulevard to Crenshaw Drive, then north on Crenshaw Boulevard and east on Martin Luther King before settling permanently at the Science Center.
