Emotional Vigil Held In Wake Of San Bernardino Mass Killing

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — About 1,000 people came together Monday night during a vigil in San Bernardino to remember those killed in last week's mass shooting.

Among the faces in the crowd lit by candles at the vigil held at the San Bernardino County Government Center was that of Jeff Reyes, a county employee who was among those to return to work Monday for the first time since the attack.

Reyes got very emotional thinking about walking into the office and not seeing his friends.

"Sorry, because they're not there, ya know?" said Reyes, who has tried to stay occupied since the shooting.

"When I'm busy, I'm not thinking about it too much," he said.

James Werner, a county supervisor, struggled through the day. He lost one of his colleagues.

"You read on the news that this was one of the biggest events since 911 and then you realize it's in your backyard and you walk through the front doors and realize I've been in the same building as this person for the last 5 years and, yeah, it's surreal," he said.

A black ribbon is now pinned to employee Lucero Aguiniga's employee badge. She hesitated to return to work.

"We were all sort of overwhelmed a little bit about going back to work but once we were at our workplace and talked to other workers and came together we kind of settle each other's concerns," she said.

The mass killing at the Inland Regional Center on Dec. 2 claimed 14 lives and left 21 others injured.
