El Monte Man, 33, Guilty Of Child Sex Abuse Involving 2 Children Under 10
POMONA (CBSLA.com) — A 33-year-old El Monte man was convicted Wednesday on child sex abuse charges, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced.
Roberto Edgar Torres, who was extradited from Mexico, was convicted of one count each of sending harmful material with the intent to seduce a minor and a lewd act on a child under 14 years of age.
The defendant also was convicted of two counts each of unlawful sexual intercourse or sodomy with a child 10 years or younger, and unlawful oral copulation or sexual penetration with a child 10 years or younger. Jurors found true a special allegation of multiple victims.
Deputy District Attorney Deborah Scott said the jury deliberated for less than a day.
Judge Bruce Marrs ordered the defendant to return for sentencing on May 28 in Department L of Los Angeles County Superior Court in Pomona.
Torres faces a maximum sentence of 80 years to life.
The charges involve a boy and a girl who were abused between January 1997 and March 2009. The female victim was 7 years old at the time of the crimes. The male victim, who at the time of the offenses was 7 or 8 years old, is now an adult, prosecutors said.
Torres fled during the investigation and was arrested after he was apprehended in Tamaulipas, Mexico.
