Driver Leads CHP On Winding Chase Through Echo Park, Silver Lake
SILVER LAKE (CBS) — The California Highway Patrol ended a winding police chase by performing a PIT maneuver, where officers drove into the suspect's vehicle causing him to hit a tree.
The pursuit began on the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway in North Hollywood at about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday. Officers tried to pull the driver over for making unsafe lane changes, CHP Officer Christian Carcraft said.
SKY2 reported from overhead that the suspect, driving a white Chevy pickup truck, was refusing to slow down.
Sometime around 6 p.m. the driver exited the freeway and got back on the 5 Freeway, this time heading south towards Glendale. He exited the freeway in Echo Park and has been leading officers in circles through Silver Lake and Echo Park.
The pursuit ended in Silver Lake when authorities performed the PIT maneuver, which pushed the driver's truck into a tree. Deputies took the man into custody at about 6:45 p.m.
The license plate of the vehicle is registered to an address on the 700 block of North Rosemont Avenue in Echo Park. The truck did not appear to be stolen, Carcraft said.
