Driver, 76, Arrested After Slow-Speed Pursuit In Surplus Military Truck
HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A bizarre slow-speed pursuit of a military truck in Huntington Beach ended in the arrest of a 76-year-old driver, police said Wednesday.
Police responded to a report at around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday night concerning a suspicious military vehicle near Goldenwest Street and Edinger Avenue, according to the Huntington Beach Police Department's Facebook page.
Officers attempted to stop the camouflaged truck, but the vehicle drove away south on Goldenwest Street, police said.
A slow-speed pursuit at about 10 miles per hour ensued south on Goldenwest, where the truck was heard making "loud popping noises" as it drove down the street, according to police. The noises were later determined to be engine backfire.
The driver - an elderly Huntington Beach resident - eventually yielded to police at Goldenwest and Garfield Avenue, police said. He was subsequently arrested and released on a citation at the scene for failing to yield, according to police.
The surplus military vehicle - which investigators say the driver had just purchased in Arizona - was left at the scene.
Images posted on the HBPD's Facebook page appeared to show the truck had Colorado license plates and the words "U.S. Army" emblazoned across the front side of the vehicle.
