Dreaded 90-Day Ramp Closures Along 405 Freeway Under Way

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Caltrans has shut down two major freeway ramps on the Westside in an effort to demolish and rebuild all on- and off-ramps along Wilshire Boulevard.

The first of the 3-month closure on the westbound Wilshire on-ramp to the northbound 405 Freeway and the 405 off-ramp to westbound Wilshire took effect at 10 p.m. Friday.

Traffic officials say they are expecting major traffic tie-ups and urge motorists to plan ahead, adjust travel times or carpool. Crews are expected to work around-the-clock, impacting drivers and nearby business.

"It is crazy as it is right now with all the closures and I hope it's not going to any worse," one motorist told Cristy Fajardo, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9.

After the first section is complete, six other ramps are scheduled to be demolished and rebuilt. Each will be shut down at various times in the months ahead, KNX 1070's Ed Mertz reported.

"We're going to be monitoring traffic conditions very closely and we can make some adjustments to the traffic signals to keep traffic moving. We'll also have traffic control officers out," said Metro spokesman Dave Sotero.
