Richard Heltebrake was driving his silver truck near Barton Flats, which is located on Glass Road off Highway 38, when he said the 33-year-old ex-LAPD officer confronted him.
"Christopher Dorner jumped out in front of my truck. He apparently had crashed whatever vehicle he was driving. And he stopped me at gunpoint," he said.
Heltebrake, who was riding with his Dalmatian, told KCAL9's Stacey Butler that he immediately stopped his pickup and raised his hands up.
"(Dorner) said, 'I don't want to hurt you. Just get out and start walking up the road and take your dog with you,'" he said.
The 61-year-old Boy Scout leader and former reserve police officer started to walk away when gunfire erupted.
"Ten seconds later, there were a bunch of gunshots, which apparently were the deputies coming up the road behind me," said Heltebrake. "I started running in the snow and got behind a tree for some cover. I called my deputy friend and told him what had just happened."
Heltebrake said he would "absolutely" pursue the $1 million reward for Dorner's capture.
