Police then contacted the unidentified suspect at a gas station, located near Central Avenue and Del Amo Boulevard.
"The suspect pulled out a firearm and shot at the officer," Carson Police Department Deputy Chief Robert Luna said.
Police followed the suspect, with the assistance of a Los Angeles Police Department helicopter, to nearby Dr. Thomas Mills Memorial Park.
"It looked like the suspect was trying to gain a tactical advantage from what the observer was telling us. There was another, what we believe to be, a potential exchange of gunfire at the park from both the suspect and the police officers," Luna said.
He continued to run from authorities and was fatally shot around 3:14 a.m. in a residential neighborhood in the 20000 block of Hillford Avenue.
No officers were injured in the shooting.
Additional details were not released.
