Dog Fighting App Has Animal Activists Howling Mad
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick and the union that represents LAPD officers are calling for a controversial cell phone app to be banned.
They say "Dog Wars" glorifies dog fighting – a crime that Vick was convicted of back in 2007. He served a year and a half in prison before returning to the NFL in 2009.
The free game, which is for Google's popular Android phones, allows users to simulate real dogfighting by feeding digital pooches water, food and even steroids. User can also buy weapons to defend themselves from police, which is an obvious concern to both parents and authorities.
The Los Angeles Police Protective League is teaming up with the Humane Society to get the app removed.
"We are in fact animal lovers ourselves… This is our groundbreaking way to raise money/awareness to aid REAL dogs in need, [and] execute freedom of expression," Kage Games, the maker of the app, said to the Los Angeles Times in a statement.
