Dodgers, Diamondbacks Brawl On Field After Four Batters Hit By Pitches
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The first time the Dodgers and Diamondbacks emptied their benches, following Miguel Montero getting hit by a Zack Greinke pitch, there was a lot of standing around. The second time the benches emptied wasn't so passive.
After Greinke was hit high by a pitch by former USC Trojan Ian Kennedy in the bottom of the seventh inning on Monday night's game, the benches cleared for the second time of the night, resulting in a brawl.
It all started in the top of the fifth when Greinke hit Cody Ross with a pitch. Jason Kubel followed up by connecting on a 2-run home run to give Arizona a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Kennedy threw a 92 mph fastball that hit Dodgers rookie phenom Yasiel Puig in the nose.
There was intense, extended booing from the crowd, and that was followed by Andre Ethier slapping a ball over the right field wall for another 2-run homer to tie the game at two.
In the top of the seventh, Greinke beaned Diamondback catcher Montero square in the back. Warnings were issued to both teams, and both benches cleared as tensions continued to rise. There was a visibly angry Arizona manager Kirk Gibson yelling at the umpires throughout the interruption.
In the bottom of the inning, Kennedy retaliated by throwing at Greinke, pegging him near the head.
And with that, they were off to the races.
Both teams emptied their benches again, and this time, the teams clashed.
The Dodgers swarmed near Montero near the plate as Kennedy was ejected from the game for hitting Greinke.
Don Mattingly looked like he was specifically letting Montero hear it before joining the bulk of the brawl, which had settled near the Diamondbacks dugout.
Ronald Belisario could be seen landing a couple hits on a Diamondback, that may or may not have been Miguel Montero.
Dodger's hitting coach Mark McGwire was seen going face to face with Gibson before, somehow, finding himself in the middle of the clash.
Yasiel Puig also saw action in the bulk of the brawl and was yelling intensely at a number of players.
Kennedy, Puig, McGwire, Gibson, Belisario and Diamonbacks assistant hitting coach Turner Ward, were all officially ejected from the game.
"Puig got hit in the face. So if you can't pitch inside without hitting somebody in the head, then you shouldn't pitch inside," Mattingly said after the game. "So he gets hit in the face, Montero gets hit in the back. It's over."
The Dodgers rallied to win the game 5-3 off a bases-clearing double by Tim Federowicz in the eighth inning.
The two teams will face off again Wednesday at 7:10 p.m.
