Dodgers, Cuban Infielder Alexander Guerrero Agree To 4-Year, $28M Deal
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Dodgers have agreed to a four-year, $28 million contract with Cuban infielder Alexander Guerrero, CBS Sports reports.
The 26-year-old defected from Cuba earlier in the year and has been training in the Dominican Republic. He secured an unblocking license from the United States Office of Foreign Assets Control on Sept. 6, allowing him to sign with Major League Baseball, which granted him free agency in July, according to MLB.com.
Guerrero hit .290/.402/.576 with 21 home runs in 328 plate appearances during his final season in Cuba, CBS Sports reports.
MLB.com first reported Guerrero and the Dodgers were nearing a five year, $32 million contract, but according to CBS' Jon Heyman, Guerrero reportedly wanted a maximum four-year deal so he can be eligible for free agency after he turns 30.
The Dodgers signed two international players last year, lefthander Hyun-Jin Ryu from South Korea and Yasiel Puig from Cuba, who are both candidates for Rookie of the Year, according to Heyman.
Los Angeles' regular season will begin March 22, 2014, when the team will travel to Sydney, Australia, to play the Arizona Diamondbacks in MLB's Opening Series.
