Dodgers Broadcaster Vin Scully, Lakers Legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Honored At White House
WASHINGTON (CBSLA.com/AP) -- Two Los Angeles sports legends were among 21 American actors, musicians, athletes and others awarded the nation's highest civilian honor Tuesday at the White House.
Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully and Lakers Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were on hand for the ceremony, along with NBA great Michael Jordan and actors Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro and Robert Redford.
Bruce Springsteen and Diana Ross were also being recognized for their music.
Scully and Springsteen captured their meeting on social media.
Other honorees included philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates, comedian Ellen DeGeneres and broadcaster Vin Scully.
Obama says the people receiving the medal helped push America forward and inspired millions around the world.
The award recognizes especially meritorious contributions to the national interests of the United States, to its culture, or to other significant endeavors.
