DMV To Offer Vintage License Plates
SACRAMENTO (CBSLA.com) – Drivers in California will soon be able to relive the good old days, at least on the front and back of their cars.
Starting in 2014, the Department of Motor Vehicles will offer vintage license plates for an extra $50, including ones issued in the 1950s, 1960s and 1980s.
This is a result of AB 1658 – a bill signed last week by Gov. Jerry Brown. The DMV will begin taking applications for the plates on Jan. 1, 2013.
"AB 1658 will enable the backyard auto restorer, the nostalgic, or the owner of a brand-new retro-styled automobile to choose a license plate that best matches the look of their car while making a little money for the state too," said Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Silver Lake) while talking with the L.A. Times.
According to the guidelines established by the bill, the plates will only become available if 7,500 applications are received throughout the state. If that number is not met, the DMV will refund all of the deposits collected.
The bill also states that any additional revenue made from these vintage plates will be transferred to the California Environmental License Plate Fund.
