DMV Prepares For The 'Silver Tsunami'
STUDIO CITY (CBS/KCAL) — The California Department of Motor Vehicles is preparing for a "Silver Tsunami" of new senior citizens to hit the state's roadways.
A Senior Ombudsman for the DMV stopped by KCAL 9 at noon Tuesday to talk about issues for baby boomer drivers as the age.
In 2011 the first baby boomers turn 65 and make up a "silver tsunami" of seniors behind the wheel; there will be an additional 7,000-10,000 new seniors each and every day between now and 2030.
Motorists will need assistance with driver education, information about alternative transportation sources and maintaining safe mobility. The California Department of Motor Vehicles has already started to respond to those needs with its Senior Ombudsman Office, which was created in 2006 to help older driver and their families better deal with personal licensing issues.
