Distracted Driver Gets 3 Years Of Probation In Crash That Killed Baby, 4 Months
WESTMINSTER (AP) — A Southern California man whose distracted driving caused a crash that killed a 4-month-baby has been sentenced to three years of probation.
Robert Anthony Casares of Huntington Beach was also ordered Tuesday to donate $5,500 to a nonprofit foundation and serve 300 hours of community service as a school crossing guard.
Prosecutors said that while driving last September, Casares looked down to secure his laptop from sliding to the floor. When he looked up, he struck a truck that had stopped in front of him, pushing the truck into an intersection and a family that was walking the crosswalk. The baby was thrown off a stroller being pushed by her mother and landed on her head.
Casares pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence.
