Disneyland's 'Big Thunder Mountain Railroad' To Undergo $4M, 9-Month Renovation
ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — Disneyland's "Big Thunder Mountain Railroad" will close Monday to undergo a $4 million renovation.
The Frontierland roller coaster, which opened in Sept. 1979, will be updated the next nine months and is expected to reopen in fall 2013.
The ride mimics a runway train through an old west canyon and features a 135-foot mountain which was designed based off Utah's Bryce Canyon.
"Updates being made to the attraction will include: new ride vehicles (but don't worry – they'll still look like the trains that you know and love!), track replacement (but the attraction will still follow its current course), repainting portions of the mountain itself (Walt Disney Imagineering has once again carefully studied Bryce Canyon for inspiration)," the Disneyland Parks blog stated.
ABC purchased a television script based off the ride in November.
