Disneyland Visitors See Increased Presence Of Uniformed Officers In Wake Of Orlando Mass Shooting
ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — Visitors to Disneyland in Anaheim say they've encountered stepped-up security in the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
"When you're coming in, there's like a lot more security and police than I've ever seen," said one park visitor. "Usually they have security but not like actual police officers like roaming around. And then now they're
having a lot more people like go through the metal detectors and all that stuff."
Authorities were looking into the possibility that the suspected shooter, Omar Mateen, allegedly scoped out Disney World in Florida as a possible terror target before settling on the Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando.
Disney officials, according to City News Service, said security had been ramped up at all of its theme parks as a precaution. However, the theme park told a video-journalist for CBS Los Angeles that it had taken the additional security measures following the mass shooting in San Bernardino last December.
"Unfortunately we've all been living in a world of uncertainty, and during this time we have increased our security measures across our properties, adding such visible safeguards as magnetometers, additional canine units, and law enforcement officers on site, as well as less visible systems that employ state-of-the-art security technologies," Disney spokeswoman Jacquee Wahler told the wire service.
Another park visitor said he's noticed a definite increase in security at the park.
"To me, it's good," he said of the increased security. "To me, I feel it feels safe. It feels like they're making a big effort to keep people safe here."
The mass shooting claimed the lives of 49 people and left about 50 others injured.
