Disfigured Afghan Woman Unveils Her Prosthetic Nose In LA
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The disfigured Afghan woman whose photo was featured on a Time magazine cover has stepped out in public for the first time with a temporary prosthetic nose.
The 19-year-old, identified only as Aisha, has said her nose was cut off as punishment for running away from her violent husband.
She was honored last week at a gala hosted by the Grossman Burn Foundation, which is in charge of her reconstructive surgery.
Aisha received an award presented by California first lady Maria Shriver. She also met privately with former first lady Laura Bush.
Doctors recently fitted Aisha with the temporary nose so she could visualize what she would look like and to help her build her confidence.
No timetable has been set for when she will begin the surgeries to get a new nose.
