DHS Chief Debuts LAPD Counter-Terror Training At LA Port
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Local law enforcement officials joined the nation's homeland security chief on Monday to promote a joint public-private sector effort to boost security at Southland ports.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck and a host of other elected officials met with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to mark the expansion of the "See Something, Say Something" program at the Port of Los Angeles.
The public-private sector awareness program to spot terrorist threats, however, is only one reason for Napolitano's visit.
KNX 1070's Pete Demetriou reports the visit also kicks off the debut of a high-tech school to train police for maritime threats.

The Maritime Law Enforcement Training Center (MLETC) is a fully-accredited curriculum based in part on lessons learned in securing the Port of L.A.
Police departments across the nation will utilize the program to teach officers everything from maritime boarding procedures to vessel identification and counter-terrorism practices.
