Detective's Traffic Death Prompts Roadway Changes In Beverly Hills

BEVERLY HILLS (CBSLA.com) — Several recent crashes are raising safety concerns about a stretch of road in Beverly Hills, with the latest claiming the life of a LAPD detective last week.

On Friday, an out-of-control cement truck barreled into Det. Ernest Allen's truck on Loma Vista Drive. He died from his injuries. Allen is the fourth LAPD officer to die in a traffic accident in the past two months. He's the second person to lose his life along Loma Vista.

The incident has prompted roadway changes that will hopefully make the steep roads that cut through Trousdale Estates safer for motorists.

The LAPD mourned Allen's death Monday while Beverly Hills police initiated a crackdown on heavy-equipment vehicles traveling through the area, specifically Loma Vista Drive and Coldwater Canyon.

Officers are patrolling the area and have set up checkpoints. Several freight trucks were stopped and told they couldn't proceed anywhere near the Loma Vista roadway.

A local foreman for a construction project in the area was told his team would have to suspend work for 30 days, CBS2/KCAL9 reporter Dave Lopez reported.
