Carjacking Suspect Killed In Deputy-Involved Shooting In Industry
INDUSTRY (CBS) — A sheriff's deputy shot and killed a suspect in Industry Saturday afternoon.
The deputy-involved shooting was reported at 1:52 p.m. in the 15000 block of East Stafford Street, said Deputy Guillermina Saldana of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.
No deputies were injured, Saldana said.
Reporting from the scene, KCAL9 and CBS2 reporter Amanda Burden says the suspect is dead and that he was shot directly in front of the City of Industry's Sheriff's station.
The wounded suspect was reportedly involved in an unsuccessful carjacking.
Burden says the attempted carjacking took place at Casino Auto Sales, a used car lot, about four miles away from the shooting in La Puente.
Carlos Corcuera was working on the lot when he says a man came up to him and asked to see a Dodge Charger. Then the man pulled out a gun.
"He take out the gun and point the gun at me and he says, 'I'm the real Jesus. I'll blow your brains out, or allow me to take this car out."
He said the man was relentless until Corcuera handed over the keys. "He said, 'I kill you now, alright?' Or leave?, okay, okay, okay."
The suspect led deputies on a brief chase.
Mike Rosson, with the Sheriff's department, says "the suspect exited the vehicle. He fired a round which struck the radio car. Deputies returned fire and the suspect is deceased at the scene."
Cocuera said when he saw the suspect's gun, he couldn't stop thinking about his mother. "Tomorrow is Mother's day. Can you imagine? If someone kill me? It's very, very hard."
He says the frightening ordeal has him counting his blessings. And he will cherish every day. "Today is my new birthday," he said. "Yes, it's my new birthday."
