Democrats To Push New Budget Plan Tuesday
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Gov. Jerry Brown has abandoned his plan for a special election that could have extended tax hikes. Instead, he says Democrats have agreed on a new budget plan that they can pass without Republican support.
The proposed plan makes deep cuts to several programs and relies on an assumption that revenue will climb $4 billion more than expected.
Democrats believe they can raise some money without GOP support by charging car owners $12 more a year to register their vehicles and forcing online businesses such as Amazon.com to collect sales tax on California purchases.
Republicans are attacking the plan as unrealistic, saying it calls for $4 billion in revenue to "magically appear." Regardless of whether that money comes in, the plan still calls for significant cuts, particularly to courts and universities.
Democrats hope to push the new budget forward Tuesday.
