Death Penalty Sought For Man Who Tortured, Killed Elderly Woman
SANTA ANA (AP) — Orange County prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for a man charged with raping, torturing and killing an 84-year-old woman.
The DA's office announced the decision Monday in the case of Anthony Darnell Wade.
The 26-year-old Los Angeles man is charged with murder, rape and other crimes with special circumstances.
He remains jailed Tuesday.
Prosecutors contend that last year, Wade entered Bessie Whyman's home in Anaheim through a broken window, tied up and raped the woman, stabbed her with a kitchen knife and saw, then stole her purse and car.
He was arrested in San Bernardino after a disturbance at a supermarket. Authorities say he had Whyman's car and credit cards.
