19-Year-Old Fatally Shot In San Bernardino After Following Robber
SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — A 19-year-old man was shot and killed Monday night as he followed a suspect who robbed him and his girlfriend.
Family and friends identified the victim of the shooting as Christian Morales. He was shot and killed after following a suspect who tried to rob him, KCAL9's Adrianna Weingold reports.
His girlfriend, Jill Haberbush, was with him and watched as he was gunned down in the 1300 block of Poplar Street.
"I can't believe that he's gone," she said. "I know he's gone but it hasn't hit me."
Haberbush said she and Morales were robbed by someone looking for drugs and alcohol, although the couple didn't have any.
Morales insisted on following the robbers until police arrived. He was shot twice while protecting Haberbush from gunfire.
Morales was a swimmer and wrestler at Colton high school. Haberbush graduated from the school last year.
Officers were sent to the scene at about 8:30 p.m. and found Morales inside a vehicle that appeared to have crashed into a pole.
He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
No suspect description was available Tuesday afternoon.
According to police, the incident marks the city of San Bernardino's 27th homicide this year.
