Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting Reported In Seal Beach
SEAL BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Officials confirm that a deadly shooting followed a police pursuit Saturday that started in Garden Grove and ended in Seal Beach.
An unidentified suspect was involved in an alleged act of domestic abuse. The man's girlfriend called Garden Grove police around 4:30 p.m. saying the suspect was violating terms of a restraining order.
While police were questioning the man's girlfriend, another officer saw the suspect driving nearby. He reportedly fled and led officers on a pursuit.
The chase ended at a Chevron station in the 2900 block of Westminster, said authorities. At the station, the suspect allegedly tried to carjack someone pumping gas but was unsuccessful.
Garden Grove Police Lieutenant Jeff Nightengale wrote in a statement that the suspect struggled with the man he tried to carjack and "an officer from the Garden Grove Police Department intervened. The intervention led to an officer involved shooting." The shooting occurred about 5:30 p.m.
The unidentified suspect sustained "multiple gunshot wounds," according to police.
Before the shooting, the suspect reportedly ran through the lobby of a nearby Hamptons Inn, reportedly even stopping to say "hello" to the front desk clerks.
The man -- described by witnesses as a white male in his mid 20s -- was declared dead at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, according to CBS2 and KCAL9 reporter Bobby Kaple.
A weapon was reportedly recovered at the scene. Police did not say what kind of weapon was recovered.
Larry Haller, a witness to the shooting, told Kaple he saw police pursuing the suspect. "I thought, okay, now it's all over. But no. The guy came running through here, and the cops were in hot pursuit. And that's when all the gunfire started."
No officers were injured.
