David Beckham Fails To Make Latest Cut Of Great Britain's Olympic Team
LOS ANGELES (CBS) - David Beckham's hope of playing in the Olympics for his country of Great Britain in front of his home crowd of London is now over.
England skipper Stuart Pearce left out the star Galaxy midfielder after releasing a statement by his representatives.
"Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me," Beckham said in the statement. "So I would have been honored to have been part of this unique Team GB squad. Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold."
Beckham, 37, made the preliminary 35-man squad and was the oldest player to reach that far as the International Olympic Committee allows three players over the age of 23 to make the team.
London's Olympic committee is reportedly stunned by the cut as they thought Beckham would bring great leadership to the team.
