Daughter Who Ran 52 Marathons To Honor Late Father Named Woman Of The Year
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A Santa Monica woman who ran 52 marathons in 52 weeks to help raise money to combat pancreatic cancer, will be honored Sunday, May 19 as the 28th Senate District's Woman of the Year.
Julie Weiss, 43, raised nearly $200,00 for the Manhattan Beach-based Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. The often-fatal disease claimed the life of Weiss' father.
Weiss started with the Rome Marathon in March 2012 and concluded with the Los Angeles Marathon in March 2013. In that time, Weiss ran 1,362.4 miles.
Sen. Ted W. Lieu will formally honor Weiss about 10 a.m. during closing ceremonies at PurpleStride Los Angeles, a 5k run and walk at Exposition Park that raises money for pancreatic cancer. Weiss will be lauded for raising public awareness, hope and money nationwide to fight the disease, the fourth-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.
