Crowds Much More Organized In Hollywood Day After Mob Scene
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Just one day after a large crowd expecting a free concert went wild in Hollywood, officials are wary about two big events taking place in the same area.
Two separate crowds have gathered to see pop star Lady Gaga appear on a late-night TV show and the premiere of "The Rise of the Planet of the Apes," respectively. Both planned events require tickets.
Both events have long lines of crowds, but it's a far cry from the crowd that showed up for a free concert from DJ Kaskade.
Kaskade, who was in Hollywood for a documentary premiere about the Electric Daisy Carnival, tweeted to his 90,000 followers to come to Grauman's Chinese Theater Wednesday night for a concert: "Today@6pm in Hollywood @Mann's Chinese Theatre. ME+BIG SPEAKERS+MUSIC=BLOCK PARTY!!! RT!"
The tweet brought thousands of people to Hollywood, stunning business owners, who had to close early as crowds got violent. Three people were arrested and three police cars were damaged.
"Around 7 o'clock, there was a mob of people flooding the streets and sidewalk," one worker said.
Another worker said she blamed Kaskade for the mob scene, but USC law professor Jack Lerner says Kaskade can't be blamed unless it can be proved he intended on a riot.
"Just going down and saying, 'All right, we're going to have a block party, we're all going to dance to music,' doesn't rise to the level of fire in a crowded theater, or go hang that guy," Lerner said.
