Crews Reach 90 Percent Containment Of Aguanga Fire

AGUANGA (AP) — Crews are moving closer to containing Southern California wildfires, but dozens of rural homes remain threatened as thunderstorms loom.

In northern San Diego County, a cluster of lightning-sparked fires is about 70 percent contained Thursday night after destroying nearly 31 square miles of brush. Evacuations remain in effect for more than 100 homes in Ranchita and San Felipe.

Officials say high winds could bring thunderstorms that could cause extreme fire behavior.

About 30 miles to the northwest in Riverside County, a blaze that's burned more than 4 square miles of land in Aguanga is 90 percent contained. That fire destroyed four structures and injured six people.

Riverside County fire spokeswoman Jody Hagemann says heavy rain and hail fell at the command center near Aguanga but didn't affect crews' efforts.
