Crash Victim Located In Angeles Crest Highway After CBS2 News Crew Hears Yells For Help
ANGELES CREST HIGHWAY (CBSLA.com) — A man involved in a rollover crash in Angeles Crest Highway has been rescued after a CBS2 news crew heard cries for help.
The crash was reported at 9:54 a.m. Sunday near mile-marker 40 between Red Box and Upper Big Tujunga Canyon roads, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Rescue crews responded to the scene following the report of a car over the side of the highway and transported one person to the hospital, while a search commenced for another patient.
That search, however, was terminated after crews had spent hours looking for the individual to no avail.
Dolores Gillham, a photojournalist for CBS2/KCAL9, had responded to the scene on assignment when she heard a man yelling for help.
Gillham told CBS2's Laurie Perez she was taking a selfie at the time when she heard the man first cry out.
"I heard help and then I heard help again," says Gillham, "and then I went back to our news van and I said Nick you gotta come back with me out here, there's somebody yelling for help."
Gillham and colleague Nico Payne contacted authorities, who came back to the scene around 4 p.m.
The man was subsequently airlifted from very steep terrain.
"It was like something out of a movie," Payne said, "we're about to leave and then we hear this cry for help and we're like whoa!"
Without cellphone service in the remote and rugged area, she was able to two-way radio call back to CBS.
He was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. His current condition was not known.
But LAFD Captain Brian Jordan was glad everyone on scene was alert.
"Because of her ears," said Jordan, "she heard the person screaming after we left and she called. She got a hold of the 911 system via her news desk two-way radio system and we came back. The person is now on their way to the hospital, [Dolores] thank you very much."
