Covina Police Chief: Fallen Officer Was Not Pursuing Another Motorcycle
COVINA (CBSLA.com) — Reports that a motorcycle officer who was killed in a crash with an SUV was pursuing another motorcyclist at the time are inaccurate, Covina police Chief Kim Raney said Wednesday.
Covina police Officer Jordan Corder, 28, was fatally injured when his motorcycle struck a Honda SUV that was turning left in front of him at the intersection of North Citrus Avenue and West Puente Street at about 2 p.m. Tuesday. Corder was thrown from the motorcycle in the collision.
The condition of the 75-year-old woman who was at the wheel of the SUV – the vehicle's only occupant – was unknown but she was believed to still be hospitalized.
Raney denied a report on the Officer Down Memorial Page website that Corder was in pursuit of a speeding motorcyclist who had just run a red light.
Officer Corder may have been attempting a traffic stop, but the department said that was unconfirmed. The motorcycle did have a camera and investigators are in the process of pulling up the footage.
Corder, a seven-year veteran of the Covina Police Department, joined the traffic division in May. He was pronounced dead at Citrus Valley Medical Center-Intercommunity Campus in Covina and is survived by his wife; his father, Mark, a retired police captain; and his mother, Diane.
The fatal collision is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol, which will pass on its findings to the Covina Police Department, CHP Officer Peter Bishop said.
