Couple Warning Other Parents After Suspecting Their Son's Shoe Sparks Fire
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A Houston couple warned other parents Monday after suspecting their child's shoe sparked a fire.
Attila Virag and his wife, Jovan, noticed a burning smell coming from their SUV Saturday. Then the couple discovered a burned mark on the floor of the backseat, and the passenger seat was melted.
The Virags said the only things in the backseat were clothes and their 2-and-a-half-year-old son's light-up "Jake and the Neverland Pirates" shoes.
The Harris County Fire Marshal determined one of the sneakers possibly sparked the fire. Half of it was charred.
"I'm just glad that my son wasn't wearing it at the time," said Jovan. "If he had been wearing it, I don't know if he could have told me my foot's hot. And I don't think he could take it off by himself."
"There was a little lithium battery in there that could be flammable if it's shorted," Attila said after he dissected the other shoe that did not burn.
"I don't want this to happen to somebody else. And we're relieved it happened in our car because at least that can be fixed," Jovan added.
The couple said they planned to reach out to Payless where they bought the $25 shoes.
Payless told Romper.com in an email that it did not wish to comment.
