Couple Found Shot Dead In Senior Community

LAGUNA WOODS, Calif. (AP) — The shooting deaths of an elderly couple in an Orange County retirement community have been ruled a murder-suicide.

The sheriff's office spokesman said Tuesday that 77-year-old Arthur Baar shot his 72-year-old wife, Caryl, in the couple's bathroom Monday and then turned the gun on himself.

A part-time caretaker heard the shots and called police.

Sheriff spokesman Jim Amormino says the couple had been married more than 50 years and had two adopted daughters who live out-of-state.

The Baars had lived in the single-family home for 11 years in Laguna Woods, a set of senior residential communities 45 miles southeast of Los Angeles where the median age is 78.

Amormino says previous reports that the Baars were arguing before the shooting were incorrect.
