County Supervisors Ask Governor To Declare State Of Emergency After San Pedro Slide
SAN PEDRO (CBS) — The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors agreed Tuesday to ask the governor to declare a state of emergency in San Pedro due to a landslide that took out part of an oceanfront road.
About an inch of steady rain on Sunday sent a damaged section of Paseo del Mar between Western and Weymouth avenues into the surf. City officials said about 600 feet of road was lost.
Witnesses said power lines began to sway about 3 p.m. Sunday just before the a section of road gave away. No private property was damaged, though the slide area borders the White Point Nature Preserve.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa urged people to stay away because the area remains unstable.
The county Board of Supervisors will send a letter to Gov. Jerry Brown, asking him to declare a local state of emergency, which would free up some government money for repairs.
