Council Votes To Enter Negotiations With Angels, 'Of Anaheim' Still Up In The Air
ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — The Anaheim City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday to enter into negotiations over a long-term lease agreement with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
The team will stay put in Anaheim for three more years in order to give the parties involved in a series of long-term deals more time to negotiate.
Among the items that remain up for discussion is whether "of Anaheim" will remain in the official team name.
Angels' owner Arte Moreno is asking the city to give him control of the stadium's parking lots in order to develop the surrounding property with restaurants and condominiums.
New negotiations could mean that the team would start paying the roughly $600,000 each year in upkeep for the stadium. The Angels could also make a multimillion dollar investment to completely renovate the stadium.
In exchange, Moreno has promised to sign a long-term lease, which will include significant upgrades to the stadium but could allow the team to drop the "of Anaheim" from their name.
The City Council agreed in the meeting to work with the Angels on naming rights.
